Government of Alberta introduces Builder Licensing

On May 4, 2017 Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson introduced Bill 12 to the Alberta Legislature.

Bill 12, New Home Buyer Protection Amendment Act, proposes a move to license home builders across the province of Alberta.  Once the Bill is passed and  comes into force through enabling Regulations, it will require that builders maintain an active license to build new homes and secure home warranty coverage in the province of Alberta.  The Bill also creates the requirement for an online registry of licensed builders to help homebuyers select a reputable builder.

Once the legislation is passed, specific program details will be further outlined in enabling Regulations.  The enabling Regulations are expected to be created and come into force in the fall of 2017, with a phased implementation over  six months following.
